Walk Nashville Week 2011

The 2011 Walk Nashville Week was the 13th annual week celebrating and promoting walking throughout Nashville. Thousands got out and got active October 1-7.  Be sure you're among them when WNW 2012 rolls around next October.


2011's events promoting walking for fun, exercise, and transportation included:


Walk Nashville Week Kick-Off & Heart Walk – Oct. 1
More than 10,000 people joined Mayor Dean and the American Heart Association in the Heart Walk!

Personal Walks: Walk to Worship, Walk Your Neighborhood – Oct. 2
While no specific events were planned on this day, Walk Nashville Week encourages people to walk to worship or walk in their neighborhood.

Walk at Lunch – Oct. 3
In conjunction with the Nashville Downtown Partnership’s Employee Appreciation Week, employees walked with Mayor Dean and Tom Turner, president and CEO of the Nashville Downtown Partnership.  The first 500 downtown employees to cross the finish line received a healthy complimentary lunch from The Pita Pit.

Walk and Bike Your City – Oct. 4
This downtown interactive art event at the Fifth Third Center Plaza invited individuals to paint on “walking man” and “walking woman” figures that were placed “walking” around downtown Nashville.

Walk to School Day – Oct. 5
Coinciding with International Walk to School Day, Nashville’s Walk to School Day has one of the largest participations in the country. More than 65 schools citywide took part. This years lead school was DuPont Hadley Middle School. In addition to Metro-Nashville Public Schools, partnering agencies included Cumberland Valley Safe Kids and Vanderbilt Center for Community Engagement.

Walk for Active Aging – Oct. 6
Seniors at area community centers participated in a 21-day walking challenge that included a healthy eating component. Walk Nashville Week’s Walk for Active Aging celebrated their achievements at Hadley Community Center. This program was presented in partnership with Meharry Center for Women’s Health Research.

Walk the Workplace – Oct. 7
  • Metro Public Health Department and Music City Star – Early morning promotion at the Music City Star downtown station and Public Square offered healthy breakfast bars and fresh fruit to walkers.
  • Farmers' Market Friday - Downtown employees rode the free Music City Circuit Blue Line to join co-workers at the Nashville Farmers' Market and pick up a complimentary bag of freshly harvested produce, enjoy music, and eat lunch at one of the 11 restaurants inside the Market House.
  • The Green Hills Action Partners  & Whole Foods - Walk Green Hills. The Green Hills walk has been a consistently vibrant and well-attended part of Walk Nashville Week.
Walk with Nature – Oct. 8
Nashvillians joined Mayor Dean and the Tennessee Ornithological Society for a morning nature hike at Shelby Bottoms Greenway.
