Open Streets Nashville is a movement to activate people, strengthen businesses and inspire public spaces by temporarily closing the road to cars. Walk Bike Nashville currently has a permit pending for October to host our second Open Streets Nashville on Charlotte Ave! To learn more about the upcoming program come to our public meeting next week! Some of the staff had the chance to visit Louisville to check out their Open Streets program, CycLOUvia.

The streets at CycLOUvia were the place to be on Sunday!

As we prepare for our second Open Streets program we look to other cities for ideas and inspiration. Members of our team have experienced this phenomenon in San Antonio, Atlanta, New York City and Los Angeles. Louisville held their program last Sunday and three members of our staff and a board member got to play in the streets without cars and hang with some of our favorite neighbors from Louisville! Enjoy some of the images of CycLOUvia!

This bluegrass band found a large patch of shade right when the program started. As the day went on their audience grew larger and larger! Kentuckians love their bluegrass!

This happy dog rolled around CycLOUvia in style! All are welcome, people and pups!

Bikes mean business! This restaurant had 6 official bike parking spots. During CycLOUvia lots of participants stopped in on foot and bike, walking and biking customers need less space for parking and come hungry!

This fish definitely turned heads on the route! It was fun seeing everyone's unique bikes.

Businesses along the route brought their wares to the street. This shop has been here for 104 years. The owners sat out front and sold merchandise with a sidewalk sale and posed for pictures. Louisville royalty alert!

When you step out of a car you get to view the world at a slower pace. There were lots of cool murals along the route that we had time to stop and appreciate.

What a special program Louisville has. The street felt like a long, skinny park! Some parts had vendors and activities, while other areas were just for walking, rolling and enjoying being outside! We're so excited to bring Open Streets Nashville back in October. Please show your support for this program by coming to a community meeting on August 17 from 6-7 at OneC1ty. Let's open our roads up to people and play in the streets!
